Whether for use at the climbing gym or for outdoors, rock climbing pants for women that are both cute and functional can be hard to come by. Since I started bouldering 3 years ago, the best pants I’ve been able to find are made for hikers. There is a company I’ll mention below that exclusively caters to climbers, but these types of companies aren’t super common (yet!).
When looking for climbing pants, I consider the following things for function:
- Stretch and Breathability: You’re going to be exercising in these, after all. Climbing can sometimes require a lot of wide movements, and you don’t want to be constricted.
- Belt Loops (if possible): Great for hooking to your chalk bag.
- Multiple Pockets: Not necessary, but is nice if you want to carry a hold brush.
My Picks for Rock Climbing Pants for Women
1. The North Face – “Women’s Field Pants“
These pants were not designed specifically for climbing, but they have a lot of great features for climbers. With an adjustable waistband, looser fit, multiple pockets (thigh and back!), and belt loops for your chalk bag, these pants check all the boxes.
2. Outdoor Afro + REI Co-op “Trail Pants“
Made with sturdy, lightweight nylon/spandex, these Trail Pants are made of moisture-wicking, tear-resistant fabric with UPF 50+ protection. Designed in collaboration with Outdoor Afro, they cater to diverse body shapes with an elasticized waist, adjustable hems, and ankle gussets for breathability. With plenty of zippered pockets and a utility loop for your chalk bag, these pants rock! PS – this photo shows them pushed up but they are ankle length normally.
Bonus for my fellow shorties (I’m 5’2): these come in petite sizes, too!
3. Soul Fire Apparel Co. – “Chalkras“
These Hybrid Legging/Joggers offer comfort with an ultra-soft SF fabric that’s moisture-wicking and highly breathable. They’ve got a thick waistband and pockets for both convenience and style. Climb with ease in these extra comfy, lightweight pants!
4. Backcountry Clothing – Wander Zip Off Pant & Wondery Isabel 3.0 Outdoor Pant
Wander Zip Off Pants: These are designed for hikers, but work great for climbing. Plus, they adapt to shifting temperatures in a very unique way. You can zip off the lower legs to reveal cute hiking shorts. These convertible pants include an integrated belt for a tailored fit.
Wondery Isabel 3.0 Pants: Crafted from a recycled cotton with a touch of stretch, these pants offer comfort and flexibility. They have six functional pockets and an adjustable high-rise waistband. Plus, they’re cute.
5. Any Sweatpants + Leggings
Last but not least, sweatpants and leggings are classics that will never fail you at the climbing gym.
Sweatpants are comfy but probably better used during the colder months. Leggings are a great stretchy option for the warmer months. Just make sure they’re not see-through before you climb to the top of the wall!
Both of these options have got all the stretch you need for bigger moves, are (usually) breathable, and can be cute if you know where to look.
If you’re looking for some unique, eco-friendly sweatpants, I recommend anything from American Recycled Clothing!
Conclusion
Finding the perfect rock climbing pants that have a balance of functionality and style is hard, but not impossible! These picks balance the necessities of stretch, breathability, and practical features like belt loops and pockets. Want to check out more useful climbing gear?
